All Party Parliamentary Group on Immigration Detention urge Priti Patel to shut Napier barracks asylum siteMonday, April 19th, 2021
Following a meeting with the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (David Bolt) and HM Inspectorate of Prisons last month, 21 members of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Immigration Detention wrote to the Home Secretary on Friday.
At the meeting David Bolt told the group it was a “serious error of judgement” to think that the military barracks could ever be made suitable to house asylum seekers – in their letter, the APPG members said that they “entirely agree”.
They described the conditions at Napier, where almost 200 people tested positive for coronavirus during an outbreak in January and February, as “utterly unacceptable” and said that they “do not believe such sites provide the safe, stable accommodation that people seeking asylum – many of whom have histories of torture, trafficking and other serious trauma – need in order to recover and rebuild their lives.”
