In the past six months, we have examined 56 “failed” asylum seekers in four UK detention centres or shortly after their release. Our findings agree exactly with those previously reported by Medecins sans Frontieres (1) and in the British Medical Journal editorial by Fazel and Silove (2):

We all take healthcare for granted. When we are ill we go to hospital. We expect to receive the highest quality treatment regardless of our financial or social status. But, if you are an asylum seeker in the UK whose claim has been refused, you are not entitled to receive any government support. So, you may be turned away from a hospital or be asked to pay thousands of pounds for treatment when you are in desperate need.

The government says illegal immigrants should not get most NHS care

"The system to ensure illegal immigrants do not receive free NHS care is unworkable, doctors and lawyers say. The government says failed asylum seekers or others without permission to be in the UK should only get limited free care, including emergency aid."
