ITHACA , which stands for "Information on Treatment and Healthcare Accessibility in Countries of Origin" is an initiative of the Belgian projects of 'Doctors without borders' (MSF). Its aim is to provide some medical information on the prevailing medical and social situation in countries of origin the Operational center of Brussels of MSF is present in.
Following discussions with Stuart Hyde (formerly Strategic Director Enforcement and Removals, BIA), it was agreed that there is a duty upon BIA officers on site at detention centres to assist independent doctors in bringing medical facts relevant to decisions to detain, to the attention of BIA caseworkers, who have a duty to consider such facts.
