According to a Home Office “snapshot” in September 2005, 2,220 men, women and children who had claimed asylum were indefinitely detained in 10 “removal centres” around the UK.

MSF conducted a series of medical assessments of detainees in 2005, and in May 2005 MSF's report "The health and medical needs of immigration detainees in the UK: MSF's experiences" was published as an annex to "Fit to be detained? Challenging the detention of asylum seekers and migrants with health needs" by BID.
