We are planning to have an information and training session on Sunday 28th February in Glasgow.
Details of the event will follow in due course. We hope that you may be interested in ; - seeing for yourself what goes on in Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre, about 20 miles south of Glasgow - using your skills to help individual detainees access adequate healthcare - providing expert advice to colleagues who do so directly - assisting the campaign to put a stop to the detention of children and families Medical Justice is a small charity that identifies and challenges instances of medical abuse in detention centres. Our network of medical professionals, lawyers, ex-detainees, detention centre visitors and others facilitates the provision of independent medical advice and legal representation to detainees. We also seek to negotiate changes to policy and practice within detention centres. We have investigated issues that challenge the basis of the sort of society we think we are. Our findings make uncomfortable reading: medical abuse of vulnerable and otherwise "invisible" detainees, and a contempt for decent values. Medical Justice handles about 1,000 cases a year with the help of a network of volunteer medics and 3 non-medial support staff. Many more detainees need help but we do not have enough medics. This is particularly the case in Scotland, where we would love to establish a network of volunteers. If you are interested in visiting detainees, or volunteering with Medical Justice in other ways, please contact Dr. Kate Wrigley ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). New volunteers will receive support and training from volunteers experienced in detention visits and writing medicolegal reports. We welcome volunteers from different specialities and all stages in training. Please email me if are not on the Medical Justice mailing list but would like to be. Being on the mailing list keeps supporters up to date with news, events and training. Also, if you would like attend on the 28th Feb and/or help promote the event. Please do forward this email on to others who may be interested. All the best for 2010. Dr. Frank Arnold, Clinical Director |
