More than 40 people attended the meeting to launch Kent Regional Medical Justice on Saturday February 10th, at Eliot College at the University of Kent.
A variety of local organisations were represented including, Canterbury branch of Amnesty International, The Dover Detainee Visitor Group, The Independent Monitoring Board, Kent Refugee Action Network Mentoring Project, Migrant Help Line and a Whitstable GP practice. The audience responded with questions and contributions to a presentation by an ex detainee, a volunteer visitor, a doctor and a lawyer. The detainee spoke with the help of an interpreter about his mental break down in immigration detention and his subsequent admission to a psychiatric unit under a section of the Mental Health Act after Judicial Review proceedings were issued by his lawyer. His case clearly illustrated the need for a campaigning organisation like Medical Justice to ensure that detainees can access the treatment they need, which should be equivalent to that provided by the NHS. Professor Cornelius Katona who chaired the meeting said "It was a resounding success and far exceeded our expectations". Kate Adams from Kent Refugee Help said "It was a real team effort and shows how doctors, lawyers, ex detainees and volunteers can work together to achieve social and medical justice. We especially valued the contribution from people who have been detained which was very moving". Results !
