Detention - including dependants


2,115 [87% of capacity] Persons were recorded as being in detention in the United Kingdom solely under Immigration Act powers as at 30 June 2007,

Of these 1,435 were detainees who had claimed asylum at some stage

* As at 30 June 2007, 1,435 persons who had sought asylum at some stage were being detained in the UK solely under Immigration Act powers. This accounted for 68% of all detainees. This excludes persons detained in police cells and prison establishments.

* 1,395 were held at Immigration Service Removal Centres, and 40 at Immigration Short Term Holding Facilities.

* The nationalities accounting for the highest number of asylum detainees were Nigerian (110), Chinese (105) and Sri Lankan (90). 84% of asylum detainees as at 30 June 2007 were male.

* As at 30 June 2007, 35 people detained solely under Immigration Act powers were recorded as being less than 18 years old. 25 of these had been in detention for less than one month, 10 for between one and two months and the remainder for between three months and a year (see Background Note 8).

Asylum detainees recorded as being removed from the UK upon leaving detention in Q1 2007: 1,685 detainees who had claimed asylum at some stage

* A total of 3,580 people were recorded as being removed from the UK upon leaving detention in Q1 2007. 1,685 (47% of the total) were asylum detainees.

* 200 children were recorded as being removed from the UK upon leaving detention in Q1 2007.

* Of the 3,580 people recorded as being removed from the UK upon leaving detention in Q1 2007, 2,485 (69% of the total) left from Immigration Service Removal Centres and 1,095 (31% of the total) left from Immigration Short Term Holding Facilities.

Removal of Asylum Seekers


* Principal applicants removed 5 in Q2: 2,980; 3,280 including dependants

* In Q2, there were 2,980 principal applicants removed from the UK, 7% lower than in Q1 (3,190), and 36% less than in Q2 2006 (4,665).

* Including dependants, 3,280 asylum seekers were removed in Q2, 6% lower than in Q1 (3,500), and 38% less than in Q2 2006 (5,260).

* The five nationalities accounting for the highest number of removals in Q2 (principal applicants) were Afghan, Turkish, Serbian, Iranian and Iraqi.

* 990 asylum seekers were removed under Assisted Voluntary Return schemes (845 principal applicants and 140 dependants), 30% of the 3,280 total.

Asylum Applications


* Applications in Q2: 4,950, 13% lower than previous quarter

* The number of applications for asylum in the UK, excluding dependants, was 13% lower in Q2 (4,950) compared with Q1 (5,680), and was 10% less than Q2 2006 (5,495).

* Including dependants, the number of applications to the UK decreased by 12% in Q2 (5,920) from Q1 (6,750).

* Including dependants, the estimated number of applications to the rest of the EU15* decreased by 10% in Q2 (31,780) from Q1 (35,475)
