A series of training seminars for lawyers and caseworkers supported by: ILPA, PAS, PALG. The course is designed and run by members of CAFID (Civil Actions Arising From Immigration Detention) including lawyers from Bhatt Muphy, Birnberg Peirce, Tooks Chambers and Garden Court Chambers. As the Home Office continues to increase the use of immigration detention and enforced removal for 'failed asylum seekers' and others, reports of abuse, illegality and procedural impropriety are on the increase. More lawyers and caseworkers are needed to help challenge shameful practices and hold those responsible to account. Those with experience in immigration and asylum, prison law or civil actions against the police may find that attending one or more of these seminars may help them consider taking up cases to support this increasingly disenfranchised group of clients. PART ONE: Wednesday 30 January 2008 from 16:00 to 19:00 Overview of the Law on Immigration Detention including o Statutory powers to detain o Home Office policy (OEM etc) o Vulnerable groups - torture survivors, mentally ill, children o Deportation and foreign national prisoners o Remedies - including Judicial review and bail o Relevant Case Law This would be aimed primarily at practitioners from non immigration and asylum background - eg police action litigators and prison law specialists who might want to expand into this area Speakers: Nadine Finch & Stephanie Harrison, Garden Court Chambers & Mark Scott, Bhatt Murphy Solicitors.
