Message from REDRESS ;

"Dear Supporter,

The Torture (Damages) Bill will, for the first time, have its Second Reading in the House of Commons on Friday 19th June 2009.

Last year, the Torture (Damages) Bill successfully passed all stages in the House of Lords. Now, with the Bill before the House of Commons, we are asking for your support - please write to your MP, urging them to support the Torture (Damages) Bill on 19th June.

This is an important opportunity for the Government to confirm its commitment to the absolute prohibition of torture. The Bill, if passed, will enable torture survivors in the UK, such as James Cottle, a British survivor tortured in Saudi Arabia, to seek justice against their perpetrators:
If I were to get a judgment in my favour, it would enable me to put a closure on this for myself and my family. It would also give me satisfaction that some day the torture may stop and those poor souls at the hands of those barbarians may have a voice. It would be a victory if the Torture (Damages) Bill goes through and these countries that use torture as the norm were brought to justice. I would then feel that we have done something constructive to change peoples’ lives and to save lives.’
James Cottle, torture survivor.
It is just 3 easy steps to write to your MP. For more information on the Torture (Damages) Bill and how you can help, go to REDRESS’ website

Thank you for your support.
