Note from Rachel, organiser of this event
"It was great to see so many of you at the two Medical Justice Training Days earlier this year. I hope you found them useful and have been able to explore this further since then. You are invited to a follow-up event, to meet again and take things forwards. We will have some teaching sessions from experienced Medical Justice voluntee clinicians and lots of opportunities to ask questions and discuss experiences visiting so far. For those who have not yet done a visit, this is a great opportunity to link up with one of the more experienced doctors and organise a shadowing visit. Emma Ginn has very kindly offered to provide lunch for us all - any of you who have attended previous meetings will remember how delicious they are !

We do really need your help to provide support to the many immigration detainees who are referred to us. At present the number of referrals is increasing rapidly and we need to develop and train clinicians who can respond to this increasing need by visiting, working by phone, helping with audit and providing specialist opinions. This email is aimed mainly at clinicians who came to the Training Days this year as a follow up, but I would really encourage anyone to come - particularly if you have been thinking about coming to a meeting but never made it, or perhaps have been on a shadowing visit and are not sure how to take things forward. The Medical Justice network is very diverse and clinicians come from a very varied background from medical students, doctors in their first years of training to specialist consultants and GPs and retired doctors.  Please come along if you haven't been to a meeting before and find out how you can get involved.

Please RSVP by email on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it as soon as you can to let me know if you will be able  to attend or not. For those who cannot make it, there will be another cycle of training days starting in the Autumn. If you know of anyone who might be interested in work MJ does, please forward this email to them.

If you are hoping to do some visits with Medical Justice at some point, you could also consider doing these things before the follow up day...

1) Work out your nearest/most accessible detention centre and think about how many visits you would like to do when you are trained.  Some people do several per week, others two per year - most of us are somewhere in between.  Addresses of detention centres

2) Be a "shadow" on a visit. Work out a day or two when you are free (either weekday or weekend, though it might take longer to get a slot at a weekend) and which is your nearest detention centre and email our referrals coordinator on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and we will try to hook you up with a clinician who is visiting.  This is a very useful experience.

3) The Medical Justice Clinician's Handbook is now online and includes examples of medico legal reports and all sorts of good stuff.....  READ IT!  it's still useful even after many, many visits.

That's all for now but do get in touch to let me know if you are coming on Sunday 2nd August and to ask any questions.  If you want a quick response, please copy the email to my personal mail as well ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) as sometimes I don't see this for a few days.

Thanks and look forwards to seeing you all,"
