"To Medical Justice people involved in lobbying on the new immigration legislation:
Given that Medical Justice produced submissions on the first piece of immigration legislation of the year - the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act - it seems that there is interest in our participating in the consultation on the next, much bigger and more important Bill, the Immigration Bill, which was published on 12 November 2009. See: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/policyandlaw/legislation/bci-act/ The work we did on the BCI Bill was cited by the Joint Committe on Human Rights following our submissions to them earlier this year, and it is likely we could have an even bigger impact in relation to the new Bill, which deals with detention in a more substantial way. The consultation period ends on 3 February 2010, so we need to work towards that deadline. Especially relevant for us is Part Six, on detention, and clauses 54 - 57 on medical examinations. Link to the Bill I propose that we meet up to discuss our approach to this, but first I would like to gauge interest in contributing research and submissions writing to Medical Justice's consultation. We should work towards a meeting before Christmas, if possible. Do get in touch if you're interested in doing some work on this, and whether there's any particular area (having looked at the Bill) you'd like to focus on. All the best, Ben" This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
