Preparation for visiting Immigration Removal Centers with Dr Charmian Goldwyn
Venue : London, SW13 0NX
Dr Charmian Goldwyn (photo left) is a retired GP and has made many dozens of visits to see sick detainees in immigration removal centres. Most of her patients were released and some now have leave to remain in the UK.
Charmian has been to detention centres around the country, including Campsfield (near Oxford), Dover, Yarl’s Wood (near Bedford), and Harmondsworth and Colnbrook (both are near Heathrow). So, Charmian knows many of the detention centres and their individual regimes like the back of her hand.
Charmian has, sadly, see a wide range of needs, including a wheelchair bound detainee who didn’t have appropriate toilet and washing access, and who had been assaulted. Also, torture victims who had not had the effects of their torture documented, HIV+ detainees denied access to their ARVs, and children regressing while in detention.
Theresa Schleicher, the Medical Justice Casework Manager, sometimes arranges for medics doing their first visit to a detention centre to “shadow” Charmian.
Charmian shares her experience through Tutorials for up to 8 medics.
The next date is Saturday 4th February 2012
